Managing a property comes with a lot of responsibility you may not be particularly fond of, and that includes dealing with the plumbing. If your plumbing issue includes the sewer line, it’s important you get it taken care of immediately so you don’t end up with a smelly mess. The following are three signs you should get on the phone right now with your commercial sewer line repairman.
A Sewage Smell
Sewage has a distinct smell that you probably won’t mistake for anything else. If the smell lasts for longer than a minute or two, chances are there’s a break in the sewer line. It’s possible you’ll also smell mildew or must as well. In any case, you shouldn’t smell anything. Sewer lines are great at trapping smells inside, so if that’s not happening, you have a problem.
If your drains are draining slowly, you more than likely have something clogging them. If it’s a problem with the entire building, the clog could be in the sewer line. It’s important you don’t pour a drain cleaner down the drain in hopes of fixing the issue, as this commonly exacerbates the problem.
Some blockages are the result of buildup just inside the drain and will only affect that one drain. If that’s the case, a plumber can remove the blockage in just a short amount of time with no hassle. If he or she can’t remove the blockage, a deeper investigation will probably be conducted to see how far down the blockage is.
A Green Lawn
This may not seem like an issue. You might be thrilled that the lawn is growing so thick and lush, but if you notice a pattern that doesn’t coincide with the sprinkler system, it’s possible your sewer line is broken below the surface. As sewage leaks out, it’s fertilizing the lawn with fertilizer you really don’t want. You should also look out for soft spots in the landscaping that might feel squishy when you step on them.
